🌴 OVERWATCH 2: SEASON 4 ARRIVES
Unlike other announcements circulating unconfirmed, all of this has already been officially confirmed by Blizzard: Heroes of Busan arrives with the midcycle update.
What was confirmed
- September 4-6: Team Drives — a new competitive sprint that groups players by how they play as a team, rather than just by individual rank.
- BlizzCon: midcycle update — content updates arrive alongside the OWWC (Overwatch World Cup) celebration.
- Questwatch: live TTRPG — a live-streamed tabletop role-playing game, as part of BlizzCon's festivities.
Why Team Drives is the most interesting part
Grouping players by how they play as a team, instead of just individual rank, is a different approach than the traditional competitive matchmaking formula. If it works as described, it could address a common complaint in team shooters: the disconnect between individual rank and how well someone fits playing in a group.
An unconventional event
Questwatch, a live-streamed TTRPG as part of a shooter's festivities, is an unusual programming choice. It suggests Blizzard is trying to diversify the kind of content it offers during these celebration periods, beyond just trailers and balance announcements.
